The Grief Ledger
For anyone carrying a loss

Some trades are made for us.

Every other trade in life is one we agree to. Grief is the ledger entry that closes without your signature.

The Grief Ledger is a gentle, private check-in. It helps you name what you lost, meet the feelings that came with it, see what you’ve been trading to get through, and find what is still yours to carry forward.

Who it’s for

Loss is loss.

Grief isn’t only for death. It comes whenever something that was part of who you are is gone for good.

Every loss in the same club is still different. Yours counts, whatever anyone else is carrying.

How it works

Eight short parts. One clearer picture.

You answer at your own pace, take breaks whenever you need them, and finish with a personal Grief Ledger you can print or save.

PART 1What you lostName it, in your own words if you like.
PART 2The Misery IndexHow heavy it is: from disappointment to grief, the point where an entry closes for good.
PART 3What it gave youWhat that relationship paid into your life that nothing else did.
PARTS 4 AND 5Your tableThe feelings that arrived uninvited, and where each one sits: at the head of the table, or by the door.
PART 6How you’re getting throughThe trades you’ve made to survive it, what they buy, what they cost, and a gentler one to try.
PART 7Fear and depthFear sorted into three rooms, and how deep you are today.
PART 8Meaning and what remainsWhat still connects you, what you want to carry forward, and what is still on your ledger.
AT THE ENDYour Grief LedgerYour table, your trades, a living way to honor what you lost, and your next seven days.
The ascent

Hope isn’t the end of grief. It’s the way back up.

Grief works like a deep dive. The pressure builds, the colors fade, and from down there it’s hard to believe there is a surface. Divers know you can’t rush back up. You rise in stages, pausing to adjust, and the color returns a little at a time.

The weight may never disappear. The Grief Ledger helps you learn to carry it at a depth where you can breathe.

Very deepHeavy, dark, hard to see anything else
Middle depthsSome light reaching you, the weight still there
Near the surfaceColor coming back, good hours without guilt
BreathingCarrying it, and living too
Where this comes from

Built in the trenches, not the lecture hall.

The Grief Ledger is part of Human Trade Theory, created by Dan Holbrook. Its idea is simple: we don’t really make choices, we make trades. We give up time, comfort, honesty or closeness to get something we need, usually without noticing.

Dan built it out of his own losses: a business he spent decades building, a marriage, and his son. The grief books on the shelf didn’t give him a map, so he used the tools he already had. He found that the same trades that run our lives also run our grief.

A coping mechanismThe trades you make to survive the first days and months: the brave face, the busyness, the wall. They protect you, for a while.
A life skillSeeing your trades lets you choose them on purpose, instead of letting old patterns choose for you.
A recovery toolWhen an account closes, you decide what to carry forward, what to rebuild, and what to invest the rest of your life in.
Our promise to you

Gentle, private, honest.

PrivateYour answers stay on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no one else sees them.
No right paceThere are no stages to get through in order and no deadline for feeling better. Take breaks. Come back any time.
Not therapyThis is reflection and coaching, not a diagnosis or treatment. It will tell you when it may be time for a grief counselor.
